Your mother told you drinking was bad. Or maybe she didn't, which could be your problem.

But what about all the good it can do? The sense of community that drinking sometimes fosters is a plus on the side of imbibers. It's something you can just sense at the Watusi Pub II off Locust Street in West Philly.

A humble sign belies a gathering space for locals to share stories, booze and the good sense to pitch in. Patrons regularly collect cash for charities like the American Cancer Society — and for their own, as well. "If someone in your family dies, we'll raise money for the funeral," says patron Deborah Dockery. Happier events, like graduations and birthdays, also warrant collections.

Quirks in the décor, which is partially inspired by the building's former life as a hotel, are also generous. Castle-like lighting fixtures look like they could open a secret passage if you twisted them; rows of dollar bills lie beneath the varnish of the bar. The cash represents the spot's success and longevity — they've been there for 20 years — as well as its reputation for charity.

Watusi II is also kind to its clientele on Thursdays, with a two-for-one special on any drink. That's a deal even your mother could appreciate.
