The creatures in Issac Bushkin's world wouldn't hurt a fly. At least, that's the first impression his acrylic-on-stained-wood paintings give: Hairy, sleepy-eyed beasts float in the sky or sit quietly on hilltops, surrounded by winding vines, tiny leaves, pale pink skies and strange, anthropomorphized flowers whose giant thorns look like Pinocchio noses. As if to accept nature and all of its quirks, the beasts arch their necks inquisitively and reach outward with their arms. There's a calmness, a slowness, to these lumbering fellows that makes them at once endearing and kind.
Bushkin, who hails from Hartford, Conn., but now lives in Philly, will show about a dozen pieces featuring his beasts, as well as oil paintings and smaller watercolors — a handful of which will be on sale for dirt cheap during Friday's opening reception and barbecue at Jinxed. And, as a surprise of sorts, Bushkin will set up his easel and do some on-site painting and sculpture tying into the visual elements of his whimsical universe.
