Bar Fries for Bar Flies

Best Spuds

Published: Aug 7, 2007

1 Locust Rendezvous
1415 Locust St., 215-985-1163

At "The 'Vous," $4.50 will get you a generous helping of waffle fries covered in onions and jalapeños, all under a smothering of cheddar and provolone. It's a hell of a grease boat, so it might be best to minimize caloric intake by washing them down with something simple like Miller Lite. Over here, nobody's gonna care that you opted for shitty beer.

2 N. 3rd
801 N. Third St., 215-413-3666

The fries at this NoLibs favorite are fierce, and an ass-kicking chipotle Asian chile mayo is a perfect complement to the grease and saltiness of the taters. Fries come with most sandwiches, but you can also order a giant bowl for $4. Pair 'em up with the Stoudts APA — its hoppy kick will keep your mind off the spice.

3 Nodding Head
1516 Sansom St., 215-569-9525

Nodding Head's fries are served with a bourbon jalapeño mayo, a tangy treat with minimal afterburn. After inhaling an order, your plate will be covered with a greasy orange residue, so you know they're good. Eat these guys with a pint of Grog — the hints of chocolate and caramel in the stout's rich malt finish are delicious on their own.

4 Royal Tavern
937 E. Passyunk Ave., 215-389-6694

If you feel like fryin' dirty, shanty over to the Royal for their take on the classic crab fry, dusted with a generous helping of salty Old Bay seasoning. Sly Fox's O'Reilly Stout makes for a great pairing: 20 ounces of pure black magic in an Imperial glass will do well in quelling the kick.

5 Sugar Mom's
225 Church St., 215-925-8219

Sugar Mom's delivers a homey portion of intensely spicy Spanish fries, buried in Old Bay, fried onions and jalapeños. Where The 'Vous masks the spicy flavor with queso, the waffle fries here are a lactose-free experience. A crisp, refreshing Yards ESA goes well with these bar-stool bites.

Comments

Nodding Head's Grog is not a Stout. It's a brown ale.
