Culinary Mysteries Solved

Published: May 29, 2007

Q: I'm a dill pickle fanatic. What other pickled dishes or sides are out there?

A: NoLibs Southern/Jewish comfort spot Honey's Sit 'n' Eat (800 N. Fourth St., 215-925-1150) offers a farm-fresh salad featuring a mix of pickled red wine vinegar cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and green tomatoes.

The Middle Eastern salad bar at Pita Pocket Falafel & Grille (218 S. 16th St., 215-545-7482), provides a wide variety of salty/sour stuff, including spicy hot peppers and tangy mango salad, but the pickled baby eggplant really stands out. At Penang (117 N. 10th St., 215-413-2531), a mixed veggie side order — cabbage, mushrooms, carrots and broccoli pickled in turmeric powder, sesame seeds and spicy herbs — allows diners to enjoy some nontraditional briny flavor.

While many eateries relegate their pickled passion to sides alone, Ludwig's Garten's (1315 Sansom St., 215-985-1525) starts at the top: They use sour pickled onions to dress many smoked appetizers, like the Gerancherteforelle — trout layered with creamy horseradish and served on a bed of fresh greens.
