Playwright Tom Minter likes complicating things. As if the topic of gay marriage weren't controversial enough, Minter brings us a play so wild and absurd that if Dick Cheney saw it, he'd thank God for his relatively normal lesbian daughter.
Cakewalk tells the story of the relationship between two men, Paul (Stephen Heath) and Truitt (Fred Clark). Everything's going fine for the couple until Paul decides to go all Arnold Schwarzenegger-in-Junior on his partner by revealing that he's pregnant. Of course, everyone thinks the dude's out of his damn mind.
Relying on a cast of 10 actors, the play also incorporates Disney-esque animation to help tell the story. "It's a play for the mainstream audience, not just the gay community," says Minter. "It is about family relationships, something everyone can relate to."
I'll say. Hey, anyone else craving anchovies and ice cream
?
