The Avengers
|
During their fleeting two-year career, The Avengers blessed and cursed American indie music. Arguably the best band to have never released an official full-length LP, they introduced punk to the Bay Area. (Blame them for NOFX.) But why did so many fans hold onto hope after the act broke up in 1979? Simple: lead singer Penelope Houston, a vitriolic pixie who set the bar for queues of future female punk icons. Her brash, snotty energy kept fans intrigued, even decades after the split. Inspired by a tape of songs Houston didn't remember recording, she teamed with original guitarist Greg Ingraham in 1999 to form the scAvengers. At the band's infamous 1979 call-it-quits show, they played Winterland with the Sex Pistols. This time, it's the Church with The Plus Ones. A blessing or a curse? You'll have your answer after the first song.
