Feeding FrenzyGreat balls of spicy tempura tiger shrimp-esque fire! This chichi Broad Street restaubar had a scare two weekends ago when an air conditioning malfunction sent up a blazing fire. The space was evacuated, but only sustained minor damages. It reopened good as new last Tuesday.
Why are we awesome? Because we've got the flagship location of Bootsie's, a soon-to-be-national chain serving an innovative line of all-natural hot dogs, burgers, sausages and breakfast sandwiches. It's a joint venture between Michael Conforti, associate head writer of General Hospital (fo' real) and "Boots," who doesn't use a surname. "It's the only name I'm known by," says Boots. "Like Cher, Madonna, or maybe Sting." No word on whether he's well-versed in the tantric. Bite This: Bootsie's is all about the exotic meatsthe menu features Kobe beef dogs, rabbit sausages and ostrich burgers.
It looks like the former Penn Steaks building around Bainbridge and Clarion will be seeing new life. Shaun Smith, who runs two Campus Grub Spot lunch trucks around Temple Law, will debut King Edward's in early October with biz partner Ryan Forman. It'll be a steak-and-sandwich spot with an emphasis on cleanliness and quality. Smith sees the project as an opportunity to refresh and revitalizehe's put in a brand-new sidewalk, with an outdoor patio on the way. Bite This: Smith also plans to offer whole chicken wings with about seven different sauce choices.
Marigold Kitchen owner Steven Cook told us that he's planning something for this recently vacated space, but he ain't saying what. Regardless of what he's got hidden behind his stove, he should get rid of that bizarre hobbit-sized bar downstairs. There's nothing more humiliating than shelling out nine bucks for a shot of Jameson while squatting on a stool the size of Bilbo's ottoman.
