Arts Agenda : Picks
Just Do It"Cut & Paste"
Runs Sept. 2-30, opening reception Fri., Sept. 8, 6-8 p.m., Falling Cow Gallery, 732 S. Fourth St., 215-627-4625, www.fallingcow.org
After the wild success of Falling Cow's last showthe tit art of "Boobies" there's a million things curator/owner Tim Bowen could've done. Like "Asses."
"We'll save other body parts for future shows," laughs Bowen.
For now, Falling Cow and Co. are going the collage route. Take, for example, Eric Lendl's image-association works, done up to mirror childhood crafts while simultaneously examining war and religion. Or Ellie Brown's torn book collages reflecting her sexual identity and libidinous history.
There's sculptural stuff, too, like Kent Latimer's rejiggered found objects and Anita Allyn's stirring personal narrative Imaginary Lines, made of home flicks, abstract loops and documentary footage.
Lastly, there's Caroline Shields, whose mossy gardens of eerie delight were a hit at "Boobies." Shields makes miniworlds from kids' toys, pinup babes, Catholic Mass cards, model cars and Hindu deitiesall inspired by contemporary lowbrow kitsch and Mexican folk art.
"If you've thought about starting an art collection or adding to one, this would be a good show to do it," says Bowen.
And there you have it: Think about your pockets, people, not your asses or boobs.
