Maki Rocks!
2027 Walnut St., 215-568-7874
This tiny sushi spot is under the radar right now, but its inexpensive yet expansive menu is sure to grab Center City's attention. You'll find all of your favorite maki here, but more interesting choices include the taco su (sliced octopus in a vinaigrette sauce) and firecracker maki (spicy tuna with scallions and masago). Go ahead, make fun of the nameI'll wait. Bite This: Try the agedashi starter, deep-fried tofu marinated in a lemon soy reduction and topped with nori and scallions.
Ants Pants Cafe
2212 South St., 215-875-8002
The only thing stopping me from hugging Aussie-themed Ants Pants is the fact that it's a building, and not a bright-eyed Sheila. Seriously, it's like the cafe equivalent of Alison from Project Runway. Anywho, good news: Our favorite coffee stop is now serving dinner Wednesday through Sunday. It's a BYO-friendly affair with plenty of nicely priced specials and entrees. The menu will change monthly. Bite This: The beef burger may be topped with anything from beetroot to bacon to Roquefort cheese.
Naked Chocolate Café
1317 Walnut St., 215-735-7310
Philly's newest dessert-exclusive cafe opened its doors last Tuesday. A family venture run by Thomas Sweet Ice Cream founder Tom Block and his daughter Sara, Naked crafts a slew of sweets in-house, and also offers Euro-style hot chocolates and teas. What's more, the comfy interior screams "bring your girlfriend here." I'm working on it, all right? Bite This: Sara says their carrot cupcakes and lemon bars have been moving like crazy.
