T he loss of the producer J Dilla this past February was a double tragedy, generating sadness over the darkening of one of hip-hop's leading creative lights as well as sorrow for the loss of projects yet to come. Donuts, released just three days before Dilla's passing, was arguably his masterpiece, a perfectly structured record built from snippets of old soul records that got more riveting and inspiring as it went along. Whereas hip-hop is lately trending toward icy synths and radar-blip rhythms, Donuts was warm and welcoming, the rare record that embraced the old school without sounding self-consciously retro.
