Girth and Mirth Monthly Social

Sat, Aug. 12, 6:30-10:30 p.m., free for newcomers or $8 for club members, Carriage House, University of Pennsylvania, 3907 Spruce St., 302-983-5455

Girth and Mirth of Philadelphia is a club for guys of considerable size—and the men who love them. They meet every second Saturday to hang out in all of their chubby glory in what president Kenn Miller calls a "safe and attitude-free environment."

"It's bad enough that gay people are discriminated against, but big men are more so," says Miller, a 37-year-old caterer. Most of the socials have a theme, like Christmas in July or the annual bake-off, but Miller says this month's meeting will be a regrouping effort after a hiatus in July.

Although Miller recently had gastric bypass surgery and is slimmer than his previous 400 pounds, he pledges to stay with Girth and Mirth.

"I never forget where I was," says Miller, who has been a member of the club for 15 years and president for the last four. "I care too much about this club."
