Eats : Food
What's CookingRed Sky's executive chef Michael Salvitti is following the latest Asian-inspired trend with his new summer menu. Items like pear sake salmon, Thai chicken pizza, spring rolls, fried rice and lo mein grace the menu alongside funky cocktails like the Purple Orchid, made with Tanqueray Ten, the Mojito Sorbet Martini and the Retro Cherry Soda with black cherry vodka. Writer Lin Yutang observed, "What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?" It's hard to feel patriotic when the rest of the world hates us, but at least we can take pride in our all-American eats (and adaptations). At the annual outdoor Taste of Philadelphia event, Center City chefs present their signature dishes at discounted prices. Participating restaurants include Bluezette's, Cuba Libre and Franko and Luigi's, which will serve a "Da Vinci Pizza" made with chocolate. Food tickets cost 50 cents and they'll be sold in strips of 11 for $7, with 1 percent of all proceeds donated to MANNA, an organization that delivers food to people with HIV/AIDS. Now in its eighth year, the Joshua Kahan Fund's Super Scooper Ice Cream event is raising money to benefit leukemia research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Since its inception, the Fund has raised more than $200,000 and served some 9,000 gallons of ice cream to more than 60,000 people. With 18 companies dishing up all-you-can-eat treats, participants should anticipate a whole lotta brain freeze. 8th Annual Joshua Kahan Fund "All You Can Eat" Ice Cream Super Scooper, Penn's Landing Great Plaza, Columbus Blvd. and Walnut St., 856-751-5117, www.jkf.org.

Unfortunately, it's not as gross as it sounds. The Brandywine Valley Wine Trail is hosting a Fourth of July meat-tacular bonanza with all the trimmins, including grilled beef, turkey fish and fowl, a chili cook-off, a pig roast, wine tasting, live jazz and vintage cars. Participating vineyards include Chaddsford, Twin Brook, Folly Hill, Kreutz Creek, Va La and Paradocx. The Irish Pub is introducing a new Dine for $9 dinner menu. Guests can choose an entree from the daily menu (options include sauteed shrimp or grilled pork chops) and a signature side dish (try the honey-chipotle chicken wings or the mini-beef shepherd's pie). Managing partner Mark O'Connor says that, "with the cost of gas on the rise and the cost of rent and housing going through the roof, we decided to offer our guests an unbelievably affordable night out." Dine for $9 at The Irish Pub, 2007 Walnut St., and The Café, 2011 Walnut St., 215-568-5603.
