Eats : Food
Feeding FrenzyTaylor Barneby has found two new owners for his elegant, wine-friendly sitdown. Irene Landy and Michelle DiPietro, who both boast nod-worthy Philly dining pedigrees, are gradually easing into the driver's seat. Head chef Grant Brown says little will changeBarneby just wanted a break from the day-to-day and decided it was time to pursue other ventures. They will, however, add a midsized bar to the front of the house by late July. Bite This: Brown's Sicilian grilled rainbow trout is accompanied by arugula pesto, cherry-raisin sauce and orzo pasta salad.
This casual American eatery is part of the Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club, but don't worry you don't have to wear lame-o madras shorts to dine there. Open to the public, The Grille offers wholesome sandwich, salad and drink choices, with a menu expansion on the way. The 60- to 80-seater features lots of natural light (no, not the shitty beer), as bar seats and tables look out on the scenic fairways. Bite This: The chicken arrabiata is seasoned, grilled and served with penne in a chunky tomato sauce.
Ralph's Takeout, the South-Philly-in-Center-City lunch-hour incarnation that opened last November, closed in May. Ralph's staffers say that the owners wanted to "get out of the [Center City] business" and concentrate their time and money on the Italian Market mothership.
Damn, South Philly institutions closing locations in other regions of the city is the hottest summer trend since man capris. The University City Luke location, which actually struggled to open on time after it was announced late last year, has shut down its grill due to an alleged management dispute. For now, we'll have to either travel to Oregon Avenue or go see Mark Wahlberg's Invincible (in which Tony Luke Jr. plays "Cape Clad Eagle Fan"). Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of roast pork.
