Queer as Film
One half is devoted to Kramer's interviews with actors and directors, featuring notables like Rose Troche, John Greyson, Denys Arcand and Margaret Cho. While the interviews reveal juicy tidbits like Tilda Swinton's admission that she once depended on racetrack betting to support herself, and Javier Bardem's recounting of the time a makeup artist slathered Bengay on his testicles, they also offer plenty of insight into the filmmaking process. The second half of the book covers Kramer's reviews, which are by turns witty, frank and thoughtful, and he discusses the ways in which films with negative portrayals of gay characters can also portray sexuality positively and even erotically.
Kramer admits that he is most drawn to independent and international films, where he finds the most compelling storytelling. "I see this book as a guide to the kind of films that come to the Ritz for one week. If I didn't tell you about it, you might miss it."
