Summer Restaurant Guide '06

Party Global, Stay Local

Our favorite summer ethnic festivals

Carnival
Sat., June 17, noon-7 p.m., free, Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, 42nd St. and Parkside Ave., 215-878-5029, www.phillycarnival.com

Attendees celebrate the wide-spanning cultures and countries of the Caribbean with this massive Fairmount Park blowout. Expect to find the upwards-of-10,000 crowd shimmying to live soca and calypso music and lining up at wood grills overflowing with jerk chicken. The organizers say the theme is "nothing can stop us now." Yeah, that's the spirit! Nothing! Except an unsettling amount of rain!

Lebanese Festival
Fri.-Sun, June 16-18, 1-11 p.m., St. Maron's Church, 10th and Ellsworth sts., 215-389-2000

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Leba-fest, held right around the corner from the Italian Market. Highlights include home-cooked grape leaves and stuffed cabbage, raffles, live musicians and more debke (a traditional line dance) than your little heart can handle. Organizer Bill Tayoun also says that some Mummers will be in attendance, "doing a couple things." You should probably attend on the strength of this mysterious teaser alone. They're like the Opus Dei of wacky headdresses.

Hispanic Fiesta at Penn's Landing
Sat.-Sun., July 8-9, noon-8 p.m., free, Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, 100 S. Columbus Blvd., 215-627-3100, ext. 204

Skip over to the waterfront for this popular festival, which features dancing, music, tons of grub and Hispanic arts and crafts. The event, which is part of PECO's Multicultural Series, is sponsored by the Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations of Philadelphia. Don't tell Joe Vento.

German-American Day 2006
Sun., June 25, noon-8 p.m., $4-$5, United German Hungarian Club, 4666 E. Bristol Rd., Trevose, Pa., 215-357-9851

Achtung! Take in some German food, music and dance in nearby Trevose. All proceeds go toward the Steuben Day Parade scheduled for September. While all this stuff is fun, the real highlight of the day is the crowning of Miss German-American of Philadelphia. As of last week, they were still seeking applications. Qualifications: must be able to eat her weight in bratwurst, empty multiple beer steins and be uber-hot. Dammit, it's too bad I'm a guy.

Asian Festival
Sat., June 17, noon-6 p.m., Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, 100 S. Columbus Blvd., www.asianfest.org

This fest celebrates 16 different Asian cultures, including the traditions of China, Korea, Japan and Indonesia. In addition to traditional entertainment and activities, there will be food demonstrations highlighting techniques and ingredients from around the world. Also, my Filipino mom will probably be there haggling with all the vendors.
