Theo and the Skyscrapers

rock/pop

It's sometimes hard to tell whether Theo Kogan's striving for performance artist, punk scrapper or beauty queen, or if she's critiquing all of the above, but on Theo and the Skyscrapers' self-titled debut, the former Lunachick frontwoman comes closer than ever to no-frills rawk. Maybe too no-frills: Songs like "Say It Again" and "Down the Hole" are driven and tight, but they're sorta generic. On the plus side, guitarist/keyboardist Sean Pierce carries out his mistress's orders with pep and precision, and Kogan's flexible enough to wail or tone it down to suit the music. The live presentation will no doubt be post-post-punk at its most relentless, but pick up the disc for the spooky staging of Kogan's one-woman show Screen Test on the bonus DVD. Her work with the Skyscrapers is entertaining; with visual collaborator Rob Roth, it's art.

Sat., June 17, 9 p.m., $8, with Jukebox Zeros, Beretta 76 and Primadonnaz, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888, www.thekhyber.com.
