Ladies' Nights

Let's hope we're past the point of surprise about women working equally alongside men, but not past appreciating the uniquely female point of view. Consider Green Light Productions' third annual New Light Series, an evening of original short plays, songs and artwork, all created, directed and performed by women, running June 21 to 25 at the Shubin Theatre.

"This is definitely my favorite program," says Green Light artistic director Alex Dilks Pandola, whose The Place of Pleasure shows a woman in purgatory debating God and the devil (both women, natch) about eternity. "I wait for New Light all year."

Returning artists among the 23 women involved include Jackie Ruggerio Jacobson, performing an excerpt from her new comedy Natural Flavors, and Hannah Tsapatoris, whose solo piece concerns her Greek grandmother. Singer-songwriter Sara Judge shares new songs, and visual artist Mara Miller will show her creations. Gabrielle Corsaro's The Rehearsal Skirt, Pandola notes, "is based on her acting experience in New York and a magical skirt that inspired everyone who wore it."

Pandola doesn't judge applicants, allowing artists to commit to project ideas in January for the June showcase. "I don't choose any common themes, but some usually emerge. We have at least three about grandmothers this year, for example."

We shouldn't be shocked by an all-female event today—we'll save that for the still-resisted idea of a female president—but there's plenty of reason to be intrigued and pleased.

New Light Series, Wed., June 21, 7 p.m., $15, through June 25, Green Light Productions at the Shubin Theatre, 407 Bainbridge St., 215-681-0211, www.greenlightplays.com.
