Don't let Barnes & Noble feed your brain. The Brooklyn Alternative Small Press Fair aims to open avenues for publishers that operate under the radar of the mainstream press.
"You'll find stuff [here] you won't find anywhere else," says fair organizer Emily Brown (pictured). One such title is Shabdaguchha, a Bengali-English international poetry journal published in New York. While in past years poetry played a major role in the fair, Brown expects more political writing this go-round as unpopular viewpoints are able to thrive in the independent publishing world.
There will also be offerings from independent record labels, author readings and discussions on how to promote small-press endeavors. The event typically draws approximately 40 to 50 publishers and 200 fair-goers. And while it's not the size of the small-press book fair held in Manhattan each year, it's a good opportunity to discover expression unhindered by market forces.
