Standard BearerLucky San Francisco! They have some of the sleekest cabaret venues in the country, and (probably no coincidence) some of our finest singersincluding Paula West, a sultry jazz chanteuse who has a special way with a standard.
And now, lucky Philadelphiabecause the clever folks who run Morgan's Cabaret at the Prince have secured West's services to close their season in style.
West has all the credentials: a real sense of style, perfect pitch and crystalline diction, and impeccable taste in material. She can resuscitate a trifle like "Cow Cow Boogie" and it's fun all over againor take a often-done classic ("Fly Me to the Moon") and make it feel fresh. Try West on the Beatles' "Fixing a Hole," on her album Restless: It's got a wonderful urban pulse totally unlike the original. (Note: West's song selection for the Prince isn't fixed yetbut to judge from her past work, you simply can't go wrong.)
This singer, a favorite of critics and audiences, is often grouped with the greats: Ella, Billie, Sarah. But her sounda strong contralto with the color and control of a hornis all her own.
What better way to spend a lovely spring evening? Head West, folks!
