Just Do ItShow Some Backbone
|
Runs May 27 through Sept. 20, Academy of Natural Sciences, 19th St. and the Parkway, 215-299-1000
It's understandable if your kids had a difficult time with the Franklin Institute's recently departed "Body Worlds." The fetuses floating in jars, the sectional spinal columns, the flecks of hair and tattoos still visible on matted, rubber-yellow skin some of that was even disturbing to grown-up attendees.
But if you're still looking for ways to educationally warp your offspring in the wake of plasticized corpses, the Academy of Natural Sciences' "Bones" exhibit will, for one thing, let them play inside an oversized human skull.
The aim is to teach breeders and brood about the structural importance and versatility of their skeletal systems, starting with bone jewelry from around the world. See how an X-ray machine reveals bones to doctors and learn the many ways your bones can break. If trauma is your thing, try reassembling a human skull around a brain mold.
A safer bet with the young ones than cancerous lung slices might have been, "Bones" is a fun way to give them a basic anatomy and physiology lesson. And if your kids are tough and dig the gross and creepy, just wait. There's a hip surgery video around the corner.
