"This is a creative and interactive way to engage both adults and children in remembering the centrality of the Civil War to our national experience and in keeping the original meaning of Memorial Day alive," says Cory Amsler, vice president of collections and interpretation at the Mercer Museum and Bucks County Historical Society. "The encampment also helps draw visitors to the original artifacts on view at the museum, including a flag rescued from capture at the Battle of Fair Oaks, an act of heroism for which its rescuer later received the Congressional Medal of Honor. After all, a little bit of inspiration on Memorial Day is a good thing."
