Snoop This

Reading

You felt awful about reading your older brother's love letters. The skulking into his bedroom, the poking around in his underwear drawer. You were so young and nosy. These days, getting into someone else's private stuff calls for more sensitivity: Only after a scrap of paper hits the street—the owner having discarded it or accidentally dropped it—is it yours for the peeping. It sounds hokey, but some of the most moving poetry can be found in crumbled-up birthday cards, breakup letters and angry notes left on cars but blown to the sidewalk. Of course, an interesting item might never float your way, so it's exciting when Found magazine's Davy Rothbart shares the best of what others have found. He and his brother Peter always seem to be on the road, picking up more found photos, letters, ticket stubs and strange, touching grocery shopping lists. Their two-in-one-night stop in town will feature Peter singing funny songs and Davy reading (or, really, performing) from the latest book collection, Found II: More of the Best Lost, Tossed, and Forgotten Items From Around the World (Fireside, $14). An open reading will follow. Remember to bring those love letters, you naughty little sleuth.
