Still nursing a sore throat from jeering Barry Bonds earlier this month at the Bank?
Head over to the Central Library and listen as two authors discuss less unscrupulous baseball greats. David Maraniss has just published Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero (Simon & Schuster, $26), a stirring biography of Roberto Clemente (1934-72). The Pirates right fielder from Puerto Rico inspired generations of Latin ballplayers both on and off the diamond; three months after getting his 3,000th career hit, the 38-year-old Clemente was killed in a New Year's Eve plane crash trying to provide emergency supplies to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua.
And with Babe Ruth's 714 home runs under assault, Boston sportswriter Leigh Montville's The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth (Doubleday, $26.95) is all the more timely. Montville brings a 21st-century perspective to his book, insisting that the rambunctious Bambino had ADHD and trying to pin down long-standing rumors that the Babe was actually black.
