Even if you didn't read the damned books, you saw his paintings. And even if the pop implications of work meant to critique the vanity and religion of 20th-century Americans were too much, you looked at the photos of soigné Warhol and his velvety underground minions—the Edies of the '60s, the Biancas of the '70s, the Debbies of the '80s—and saw how they dressed.
