In a French anti-war poster titled Peace (1989), the planet Earth projectile-vomits military weapons, thus purging the world of its killing machines. The Guerilla Girls' Do Women Have to Be Naked to Get Into the Met Museum? (1989) calls attention to the lack of artwork by females in major museums and galleries by depicting the backside of a nude woman wearing an angry gorilla head. The exhibition's purpose is simple: To stimulate its viewers, spurring them to act on the pressing issues of the day.
In his U.S. debut, the German woodworker makes sweet romance out of wood. In his piece The Lovers or Liebespaar, two wooden cups with rounded bottoms waltz and mingle when placed upon a smooth, wooden plate called the Japanese vessel. When they eventually stop twirling, they meet together and touch. The cups would spoon, if cups could spoon. Aww.
Kindergarten taught us that the U.S. of A. is a place where freedom and independence flourish. Well, children, that's all a big fat American lie told by big fat American liars. The play Devils Also Believe presents a family grappling with its identity and beliefs post-9/11, while exploring the omnipresent and often detrimental "values" that permeate this country.
