Music : Musicpicks
Shoko NagaiThe Painted Bride's globe-trotting JazzJaunts series is reaching clear across the Pacific for its final show, but the musical hybrid being spawned may have the shortest distance to bridge of all the entries. Whereas several of the previous participants have had to find an uneasy balance between the strictures of traditional musics (from Iraq, say, or South India) and the freedom of jazz, pianist Shoko Nagai's music already has the austere elegance of a poem from her native Japan. The quintet she has assembled for this show, Utakata, features Nagai doubling on the Japanese reed sho-o, Ned Rothenberg on bass clarinet and shakuhachi flute, Jennifer Choi on violin, John Lindberg on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion and electronics. Nagai's previous duet work with Takeishi is full of delicate impressionism, burying emotion under a layer of formal beauty, technical precision taking the place of the frozen masks of Noh drama.
