Blonde Ambition

Return of a Fringe rock starr.

G. THANG:
G. THANG: "I definitely wanted to bridge the gap between musical theater and rock," says DeCandia.

Gregory DeCandia's a hot dog. At least he is as G.Starr, the messianic, wavy-haired pop singer turned rawk belter in his own nine-song musical, Hung on a Blonde Ponytail (An Act of Rock). Written with stage cohort/guitarist Joe Horack ("Saint Joe"), the show, whose theatrical premiere was at Philly Fringe/Live Arts Fest 2005, concerns a struggling songwriter begging for rock immortality on his 27th birthday.

"I definitely wanted to bridge the gap between musical theater and rock a la Hair, Tommy and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, while reviving the idea of classic concept albums from David Bowie and Pink Floyd," says DeCandia. Post-Fringe, he's turned Hung into an album via producer Eric Vincent's Curve Dominant label. Tall order, right? But with a BFA in acting from Emerson, the kid's got the chops, with roles in the first national tour of Rent and a production of The Wall, and (depending on the night) as both Frank-n-Furter and Riff Raff in eight different productions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Heck, DeCandia even played the title role for Jesus Christ Superstar in Guatemala.

His role as producing artistic director of BCKSEET Productions—the resident theater company at Society Hill Playhouse's second stage, "The Red Room," where he's also general manager—is what's allowed DeCandia to play with his play.

"It's a two-sided project: the rock show and the stage show, depending on the venue. Someplace like Fergie's, that'll be the rock." But that doesn't mean DeCandia shirks on the drama in a smaller venue. Big light shows and wildly flourishing guitars accentuate a story that unfolds with two men fighting for the love of a muselike woman—usually played by Curve Dominant's other CD label baby, soul-power pop singer Naeemah.

"I hadn't even seen the play before Greg came to my studio last summer," says Vincent, who discovered both Naeemah and DeCandia on the same night at a Fergie's open mic. "Greg came to my studio with the concept in blueprint stage." Together they went for a classic Led Zeppelin sound, and got Vincent's brother, ex-Godsmack guitarist Kurt Schneck, to noodle throughout the recording. Bang. A G.Starr was born. "We resurrected the rock star and killed the pop star," says DeCandia.

G.Starr CD release party featuring Naeemah, Sat., April 22, 9 p.m., $5, Fergie's Pub, 1214 Sansom St., 215-928-8118, www.curvedominant.com.
