City Week : Mixpicks

Justify Your Existence

What:

Shag Party, the dancing kind

Who:

Rob Baen, dance instructor

When:

Fri., April 21, 8:30-11:30 p.m., $10-$12

Where:

The Atrium Dance Studio, 4721 N. Crescent Blvd., Pennsauken, N.J., 856-661-9166

What Makes You So Special:

"The Carolina shag, a swing dance style, is a smoothed-down version of the jitterbug, mostly done to rhythm and blues music—and I'm not talking Usher and Eminem," says Baen. "It's an extremely popular dance south of D.C. You may have heard of the movie The Shag. It has nothing to do with Austin Powers—but it popularized the dance. If you've done any kind of swing dance, you'll be able to pick this up quickly."
