Shoot the Stars

Maki Kawakita seminar

Thu., April 27, 1 p.m., free, University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad St., 215-717-6000

Fashion photographer Maki Kawakita knows how to work it. Recognized as an Olympus visionary for her images, Kawakita has snapped magazine covers, couture spreads, Smirnoff ads, Missy Elliot and you-name-'em-she's-shot-'em pop stars. Inspired by manga, dance and retro Japanese style, Kawakita's spreads are more than just glam takes. Her edgy images, parodies and caricatures are vibrant, cheeky, in-your-face masterpieces. Next Thursday, Kawakita will put the camera down long enough to hold a seminar for aspiring shutterbugs who want to peep at her techniques. Not everyone will land a shoot with Beyoncé in the future, but there's always a paparazzi gig.
