It's Oh So Quiet

For 14 years, the dancers of the Pennsylvania Ballet have been performing the annual Shut Up & Dance benefit for MANNA (Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance). The organization delivers 40,000 meals a month to people living with HIV/AIDS in the tri-state region. The fundraiser not only pulls in upwards of $120,000 dollars in a single night, it is a unique showcase for the diverse dancer-choreographers at PAB to strut their stuff.
Pennsylvania Ballet soloist Tara Keating took over directing the event this year, and last week she was still holding the dance cards close to her vest about what's planned. "There is a broad 'water' theme this year and there will be a special appearance by Brazilian band Alô Brasil," she said while running between company rehearsals of A Midsummer Night's Dream and SU&D.
The 30 dancers will perform a broad choreographic range from 14 new dance works created or performed by Zane Booker, Alexei Borovik, Christine Cox, Heidi Cruz, Ashley Flood, Abigail Mentzer, Igal Perry, Meredith Rainey, Adam Rogers, Hawley Rowe, Brian Sanders and Michael Sheridan.
One perennial highlight of the concert is a performance of Fokine's "Dying Swan" danced in previous years in various styles -- from classic to modern, tragic to comic, by women and men, and in and out of tutus. PAB principal dancer Arantxa Ochoa will be performing it "with a twist," Keating said. With so much about birds in the news lately, you wonder if whether that twist will be fair or fowl. Either way, bring your opera glasses.
Shut Up & Dance 2006, Sat., April 1, 8 p.m., $45-$70 ($175 VIP tickets includes 6:30 p.m. cocktail reception, premium seating and after-party), Forrest Theatre, 1114 Walnut St., 215-496-2662, ext. 136, www.mannapa.org.
