Minas

Brazilian


Minas is flexible. These local purveyors of Brazilian music sometimes perform as a large ensemble, other times they pare down to the core: Lansdowne residents Orlando Haddad (guitar, vocals) and Patricia King (piano, vocals). It was the short list that traveled to Brazil last year to lay down 10 original compositions with the aid of Rio's finest musicians. Returning to Philly, Minas rounded out In Rio (Blue Azul) with top local jazz players like John Swana—whose flugelhorn and trumpet lines are the soul of mellowness --and Tony Salicandro and Ron Kerber, who turn up the cool a bit more on woodwinds. Even at its most racing tempo, In Rio maintains its cool; always urbane, sophisticated and contemporary. At the launch party on Monday night, the local players will bring the record to life, with guest artists like Cyro Baptista filling in for the Rio-based players. It should be interesting to see how long this legendary percussionist can stay in this mellow groove before he has to break into his trademark exuberance.
