One of the joys of the keyboard/drums duo Mates of State, made up of spouses Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, is the feeling that you've stumbled into some jubilant marital spat. Though the new album, Bring It Back, is more chill, introspective even (not a bad thing), "Fraud in the '80s" finds the new parents at their tempo-swinging, vocals-sparring, meaning-obfuscating finest. It starts with a grinding organ intro as Kori sings ominously, "Don't put your hand in the pockets that feed you, you might not get it out." Jason's singing something, tooI'll be damned if I can understand it. But decoding what the hell they mean is half the fun. Later in the song, are they repeating "You will surely find this pleasing to your ears"or was that "displeasing"? I'm sure I heard both. By the end, when they're belting out, "You could surely try to be more alive!" I'm 100 percent lost and loving it.
It's a good bet Mates of State will play "Fraud" Friday, at the Starlight Ballroom. More info at www.r5productions.com.
