Groop Dynamic
|
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society continues its fine vocal series with an intriguing singer new to the city: flexible, stylish Finnish mezzo-soprano Monica Groop, who offers a recital with accomplished veteran Dutch pianist Rudolf Jansen. Equally at home in operatic, concert or recital repertory, Groop has become known for her participation in the creation of new music (the Finnish classical scene is one of the world's most productive and adventuresome). At Santa Fe in July 2003 Groop practically stole the U.S. premiere of her countrywoman Kaija Saariaho's opera L'amour de loin away from nominal star Dawn Upshaw. Nothing contemporary on her Perelman program, alas, but she does offer some fine songs by the best-known Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, plus the enjoyable cycle Haugtussa by Norway's Edvard Grieg. Every recitalist likes to weigh in with the Lieder of Schubert and in Jansen Groop has an accompanist who played Schubert for the much-missed recitalist Elly Ameling. Mozart is also a natural choice this anniversary year, and four of his songs will be heard. Ravel's "Cinq mélodies populaires Grecques" is something (along with de Falla's "Siete canciones populares españolas" and Schumann's "Frauenliebe und Leben") that PCMS should in the interests of novelty forbid its guests to perform, but I bet Groop will make those songs entertaining, too.
Monica Groop, mezzo, with Rudolf Jansen, piano, Sun., March 26, 8 p.m., $10-$22, Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St., 215-569-8080, www.pcmsconcerts.org.
