Elton John would feel right at home with John Flynn and the four other regular pianists at Tavern on Camac. Not only has Flynn stolen John's glasses, he's keeping the piano scene alive in one of the country's oldest gay and lesbian bars.
Tucked away on a narrow street in the heart of the Gayborhood, T.O.C. can get crowded when you're jostling for a good spot to see the piano men do their thing in the downstairs bars. Sing-alongs to Cher's "Dark Lady" and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" are standard, and it's not uncommon to see patrons leaning against the piano or lining the perimeter of the low-ceilinged room.
T.O.C. recently underwent a face-lift, which involved gutting most of the facilities, installing plasma television sets and replacing the sound system — which makes it all the better for hearing with.
"[Flynn is] very, very popular with the crowd," says general manager Joe Black. "The beauty of it is that there's a crowd that goes to the piano or dance bar, and they like to flip-flop. There are 22-year-old kids downstairs singing songs from Chicago and then going upstairs to dance to Madonna."
