At 75, Philadelphia sculptor Phil Sumpter Sr. has little left to prove to this city. Maybe that's why he moved to Puerto Rico with his wife. The master crafting artist has forged statues of Negro League ballplayers, black Philly cowboys and cavalry riders, and Paul Robeson. To celebrate his 76th birthday, Sumpter will show off new sculptures at his old pal Joe Tiberino's museum as part of University City's 2nd Fridays, Left of Center series, as well as lend his giant Robeson statue for part of the AAM's 30th anniversary exhibition, "Silent Voices, Loud Echoes." As one of the premier African-American artist-sculptors with public Delaware Valley monuments under his authorship, consider Sumpter's visit a holy showing and your attendance something of a necessary pilgrimage.
