Trans/Queer Art Salon, first Friday of every month, 7:30 p.m., free, Convention Center, Room 110B, 12th and Arch sts., 1315 Spruce St., 215-341-0822
Your hairdresser is gay and your yoga instructor is a lesbian, so think you've got your diversity bases covered, right? Think again.Broaden your social exposure at the Trans/Queer Art Salon's showcase of works by amateur trans/queer artists. William Way provides the jug wine, cookies and fresh veggies and TQAS founder Nik Lareau curates. The evening's first hour includes photography, sculpture, painting and other types of physical art. The next 45 minutes features skits, dramatic readings and spoken-word poetry, and a band closes everything up. Priority is given to trans/queer artists, but anyone is welcome to submit work for review.
Provocative and raw, TQAS makes Old City's First Friday look like corporate America. The February crowd60 to 75 people strongwas a mix of young and old, gay, straight and trans. Photographer Christina M. Molieri, who exhibited a photo series of heavy women in various stages of undress and foreplay, summed up the spirit of social acceptance and its role in art: "But what is the relationship between documentation of social reality and movement for social change?"
Not sure, but the jug wine is good.
