Talking Down

Opinion

Music-minded talk radio fans tuned in to a lineup shift at 1210 WPHT this week. Sid Mark's Friday with Frank has been cut down to an hour. Of course, with two other shows, there's plenty of Frank and Sid to go around. The big news at the Big Talker is that The Rollye James Show—broadcast live on weeknights, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.—has been yanked (reduced to a best-of montage, 3 to 5 a.m. Saturdays). Her old time slot will be filled by South Philly's "guy-next-door" bore Dom Giordano and a tape-delayed version of American idiot Bill O'Reilly's The Radio Factor. For those who don't know, the nationally syndicated James broadcast from all over the U.S. before setting up shop here in the late '90s. When she's not putting a sometimes-suspect/always-entertaining libertarian spin on the day's news, she's talking oldies and R&B trivia. And James really knows her Philly stuff, from TSOP to Cameo/Parkway to Val Shively to stuff you never heard of. And, on a station that takes pride in its right-wing, male-dominated lineup (Limbaugh, Hannity, Smerconish, barf), James represented the station's lone foray into diversity when it comes to political discourse. She will be missed.
