Roads Less Traveled

classical

Too many people are content to travel straight down the main roads of life. In art, as in life, some of the most rewarding adventures occur when we take a wrong turn, or even get lost intentionally. The vast world of chamber music is crowded with tiny side streets, as two concerts this weekend demonstrate. Another in an occasional series of concerts by musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra takes place at Society Hill Synagogue, and will include music by two fascinating figures from the early 20th century, Erno Von Dohnanyi, and the wunderkind turned Hollywood composer Erich Korngold.

1807 and Friends celebrates their 25th anniversary on Monday evening with a special concert that will include all three of their music directors; in chronological order, bassist Miles Davis, pianist Andrew Willis and violinist Nancy Bean. The concert is titled "From Russia with Love," and will include Shostokovich's most famous string quartet, his No. 8; a short work by a composer better known as a highly influential teacher, Glazunov; and finally, a grand Sextet (with all three music directors playing) by the father of Russian music, Mikhail Glinka. The impeccably tasteful Willis chose this work, which he considers to be a wonderful and neglected gem. Come and get lost in it.

Society Hill Synagogue Chamber Music Series, Sun., Dec. 11, 3 p.m., $15, Society Hill Synagogue, 418 Spruce St., 215-922-6590.

1807 and Friends, Mon., Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m., $17, Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce St., 215-438-4027.
