Sean O'Neal wants money, sure. For his Foundsound label, the DJ and CP DJ knight drops product from local and internationally produced techno minimalists and microhouse heads. But O'Neal's net-only label Unfoundsound is something else. The free-to-download operation celebrates its first year in existence with Unhappy Anniversary, a compilation clocking in at nearly three hours of mmmmm-tick-boing. "Sure, there's no money in running a free net label," says O'Neal, via e-mail, from Germany. "But many of Unfoundsound's artists are blowing up in the minimal scene, particularly in Europe, because of it." Because it's free. And easy. The Unfoundsound world is such a sharing, caring place. Feel free to "sample, mash-up, or otherwise creatively transform this work for noncommercial purposes," the site says. O'Neal and his Unfound partners, Kate Iwanowicz and Sylvain "Cyhl" Takerkart, want you to partake in the softly curvaceous sounds of Miskate, Diss0nance, Accidentally Andrew, Ezekiel Honig, Fusiphorm (aka Cyhl hisself) and John Alan's field recordings. "Maybe it sounds cheesy, but consider Unhappy Anniversary a gift to the minimal-loving world. The site works as a solid testing ground before we consider any of these artists for vinyl releases on Foundsound." And it promotes Un-artists. When you consider that Ritchie Hawtin is downloading tracks from Unfoundsound, running them though Final Scratch software and playing them at his massive DJ/rock-star gigs, you'll see that O'Neal's beneficence has its benefits.
Unfoundsound's Unhappy Anniversary release party with Fusiphorm, Miskate, Diss0nance and Accidentally Andrew, Thu., Dec. 1, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., free, Queue, 1718 Sansom St., www.unfoundsoundrecords.com.
