The name Ye Ren "has no real meaning," according to Allentown altoist Gary Hassay, which is fitting for a group whose method is all about the becoming, the gradual shaping of sound. The cover of their debut CD, Another Shining Path (Drimala), is a Hubble-snapped photo of three stars in the process of being born, an almost too-literal depiction of its contents. William Parker (pictured), everyone already knowsbut despite his ubiquitous presence, the bassist is never predictable. Philly percussionist Toshi Makihara is continually coaxing new sounds from his kit, such an organic perpetual motion machine that he threatens to roll off of his drums and play the air around him. Hassay is the leader in name only, given the total integration of these three minds. (Despite their communalism and the name of the disc, there is no indication the trio plan to lead a Maoist insurgency anytime soon.)
