Jazz
As Bill Murray sleepwalks through Jim Jarmusch's world in Broken Flowers, perhaps the only thing that shakes the somnambulant mood is the music of Ethiopian composer/multi-instrumentalist Mulatu Astatqe. A pioneer of "Ethio-jazz," Astatqe studied jazz in the U.S., then hosted a number of American bands in his native country, most famously sharing the stage with Duke Ellington in the early '70s. The long-distance lines went silent for nearly 30 years, until French label Buda Musique released a selection of Astatqe's fiery, groove-laden music as the fourth volume in its Ethiopiques series. The hybrid sounds of Astatqe and other composers in the series, which approximates the sound of Ellington hiring The JBs to play Afro-Cuban repertoire, caught many an open ear, including that of Either/Orchestra bandleader Russ Gershon. The Boston 10-piece traveled to Ethiopia last year and documented the trip on the new Ethiopiques 20: Live in Addis, and have now brought Astatqe home with them for a brief series of shows.
The Either/Orchestra, Thu., Nov. 10, 7:30 p.m., $17, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.
