"Big and epic" is how Roni Koresh describes Judgment, a new work he's created for Koresh Dance Company, and that may be an understatement. The piece starts off at the beginning of the world, that is proceeds through noted biblical and world events, and concludes with a futuristic scenario where both enlightenment and cataclysm ensue. Characters include the devil and prophets who appear in various acts of kindness, seduction and violence. The point, he says, is to ponder: "Was there really any evolution of our inner self? Have we changed at all in our desire for greed, yearning for power, cheating, lying. Did this really change as we became more educated?" It's deep stuff, but since this is Koresh Company, you can count on an entertaining way of getting to the heart of the matter. "It's very circusy and athletic," says the choreographer, who calls the work's atmosphere "mystical, majestic and beautiful."
The 40-minute opus is one of several works on a concert bill that also includes "Day Old Coffee," another Koresh original. This powerhouse work conveys the damage unleashed by super-charged sexual desire. Featuring seven noir-ish vignettes, Koresh says it "goes for the gut and just pulls." Other selections include "Standing in Tears," a fun piece, the title notwithstanding, along with a work by Melissa Rector and a solo by sinewy Travis Mesman.
Judgment, Thu.-Fri., Oct. 27-28, 8 p.m. $25-$30, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
