Killer hooks, chiller grooves and clever couplets aside, The Dandy Warhols' greatest asset has always been keeping it together just enough to sell the myth of the nonstop party. But their fifth album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars (Capitol), skips the dance floor and heads right for the couch. There are plenty of woozy grooves, but too few hooks to make them stick. "Love Is the New Feel Awful" begins with promise, then deteriorates into a sprawling bore a third of the way through its nine and a half minutes. Only "Smoke It" hits all the right spots, including Courtney Taylor-Taylor's best quip of the disc: "You've got more baggage than JFK, yeah/ And I'm not talking about the airport, man." But if Odditorium makes listeners feel left out, the Dandys can make it better by bringing the party to town. And if their national record release show isn't reason to party, what is?
