No Parachute
(Happy Happy Birthday to Me)

We first heard rumors of this indie rock music video comp a year ago, when we dedicated a whole music issue to independent artists putting visuals to their sounds despite the dearth of reliable outlets for such endeavors. Produced by Jayme Guokas of The Snow Fairies, No Parachute collects some of the sweetest, twee-est indie-poppers out there, "big" names like Of Montreal, Kimya Dawson, Palomar, The Cannanes and The Clientele, as well as little or local acts like Snoozer, Boyracer, Huon, Diagram and The Wee Turtles (who are much scarier than they sound). Let's assess.

Pros:
  • Finally, concrete images to associate with itty bitty indie-pop. Even if it wasn't these particular songs you were thinking of.
  • Star treatment for non-stars feels like justice!
  • The music is mostly catchy boy-girl bliss.
  • Some of the videos are entertaining, with plots and everything. Most push the bounds of their budgets to create something memorable.
Cons:
  • Too much stiff-lipped, self-conscious lip-synching.
  • A bit heavy on the abstract animation. Too many spinning shapes, not enough people. Are you shooting for 120 Minutes or Liquid Television?
  • Maybe too much bliss, not enough risk-taking.

No Parachute is pretty great at what it's going for, but it's even better when it breaks free of/comments on its own mandated cuteness. Take The Maybellines' "Wait For You." The Denver band is going "la la la la" about missing your sweetie over summer break, but onscreen, a dog/cat team are robbing banks and blowing shit up. It's clever, fast-paced and psycho.

Philly's own Overlord almost steals the show with the hauntingly bleak love song "Landlubber" and its equally stark single-shot, black-and-white video. In it, singer George Pasles emerges backward from the ocean, his clothes becoming ever drier as waves pull away from him and he reaches the shore. For a second, he turns to face the camera before time switches from reverse to forward and his journey into the ocean begins. Eventually his head slips beneath the water and you fear the worst. You can't do that on television.

No Parachute screening, Sun., Sept. 4, 8 p.m., free, Space 1026, 1026 Arch St., www.indiepages.com/noparachute.
