Jon Solomon's 100th Live Band SpectacularRadio
Here at City Paper the only thing we love more than local music is people who love local music as much as we do. That's why we're tight with WPRB DJ Jon Solomon. Every Wednesday night on 103.3 FM (7-10 p.m.), he champions the likes of Mazarin, Spinto Band and Yah Mos Def and not just with a spin and a namecheck. He also gives 'em the John Peel treatment, turning the airwaves over to them for extended live-to-tape sets. "I don't know why so many interesting bands are coming out of Philadelphia," he says, "but my show is the better for it." The local stuff is nearest to our hearts, but Solomon's also had indie/punk stars like The Constantines, The Rosebuds and Okkervil River in his studio and every show is available in its entirety for free listening at www.keepingscoreathome.com. This Wednesday's set with Seattle instrumentalists Kinski marks the show's 100th, part of a nine-hour marathon. A CD, or even a series, of highlights is also in the works. Of course, some of the best stuff goes on behind the scenes: D lek Googling their own lyrics, National Eye adding between-song applause, the mom of one of the Artanker Convoy guys dropping off cookies. And what does Solomon do while the bands are rocking out on the other side of the glass? "I sit there and nod my head."
