When Gerald Veasley plays, his face changes expressions often. That's the bass taking control of his emotions. A music wiz since adolescence, Veasley got his formal training at UPenn, and continued his education playing with saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. After six solo studio albums since the early '90s, the bassist goes live with At the Jazz Base! (Heads Up Records), which pairs him with keyboard sensation Will Brock and Philly trombone man Jeff Bradshaw, among others. Recorded in Reading, the album maintains a contemporary jazz style, but makes the most of the live vibe with extended jams and a few funky ad-libs.
Sun., Aug. 21, 7:30 p.m., $25, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400.
