No Net

jazz

Much in keeping with the understated nature of his music, saxophonist Jack Wright has been hosting the occasional No Net concerts in West Philly for two years with precious little fanfare. The weekend gatherings convene U.S. and European improvisers for a combination of workshops and concerts to explore lowercase music, the extreme minimalist end of free improv. This weekend brings together 10 musicians from nine cities, including such exotic locales as Argentina, the Netherlands and Bloomington, Ind. Half of them list laptops or electronics as part of their arsenal, if not their primary ax. But don't expect any of them to pack melody or rhythm for the journey; the idea is to play with dynamics and textures far removed from traditional song forms. The effect is something like a kaleidoscope of sound: tiny, sparse fragmented pieces tumbling together and blending into a melange of color and pattern.

Sun., Aug. 21, 8 p.m., $7, University City Arts League, 4226 Spruce St., 215-382-7811.
