School of RockQUIZZO
At most quizzos, we rock geeks usually sit quietly and get wasted while our teammates furrow their brows about oceans and war and shit. Occasionally, we get thrown a bone with a question about Iggy Pop or the Supremes. There's always the Khyber's long-running-but-sporadic Pop Quiz, but we've already made too many enemies there. Now there's a new game in town: Earlier this month, Tritone unleashed a weekly music quizzo titled Rock 'n' Roll High School and moderated by one Dr. Rock (aka local Jason Rose). Every Tuesday, the Doc presents two rounds of Q&A, a third round of song IDs and a bonus question worth a whole slew of points, covering mostly '60s and '70s rock with the occasional pre-Stones query. The top three teams win fun prizes like Rock 'n' Roll High School T-shirts, panties and bottles of Jim Beam. The first installment included loads of worthy brainteasers, ranging from the relatively simple (name the beardless dude in ZZ Top) to the pretty frickin' challenging (who's the lead singer for long-forgotten folk-rockers The Wind in the Willows?). While the good doctor makes for a most affable host, he could definitely use an assistant to help "grade papers" in between rounds. Be sure to stick around for Afterschool Detention following the game, where Rock and guest DJs spin some of the tunes they've just quizzed you on. Study up, slackers.
Rock 'n' Roll High School Quizzo, every Tue., 8 p.m., free, Tritone, 1508 South St., 215-545-0475.
