BOOKS
Get 'em started on the path to righteousness early with Hey Kidz! Buy This Book! A Radical Primer on Corporate and Governmental Propaganda and Artistic Activism for Short People (Soft Skull). If they can get past the overlong title, young'uns will surely be able to digest author Anne Elizabeth Moore's tips for designing fliers and setting up a P.A. for all those ultra-DIY protests they'll want to organize. Moore, who will appear at Molly's this Tuesday, also gives advice on acquiring basic activist skill sets: community organizing, researching and, of course, salsa making.
Tue., July 19, 7 p.m., Molly's Books, 1010 S. Ninth St., 215-923-3367, www.mollysbooks.com.
GLASS
Masters of glassblowing show their stuff at Wheaton Village's annual Glass Weekend. Tickets to the whole weekend are a bit pricey ($325), but it's to benefit the Creative Glass Center of America's fellowship programs. If it's too much, though, just feed off the creative energy of the Village in general, with demonstrations in artists' studios and exhibitions in the Museum of American Glass. (FYI: If you are going to the big party, save some time to see CP's own Robin Rice lead a panel of past Creative Glass Center of America fellows in discussing their work.)
Fri.-Sun., July 15-17, 1501 Glasstown Rd., Millville, N.J., 800-998-4552, www.wheatonvillage.org.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Before Tom Cruise got all Dianetics on us, he became famous for sliding around on hardwood floors in nearly nothing but big floppy sweatsocks. The sweatsock look nearly fell by the wayside, but photographer Rayzor Bachand is trying to revive it for a good cause and, dare we say, in a much sexier way. Bachand's Project Red Soks features models in suggestive poses, wearing nothing but big floppy red sweatsocks. Bachand was inspired by Philly native and supermodel Gia Carangi, who died of complications from AIDS in 1986, and 20 percent of all proceeds will go to the locally based AIDS Fund. Two days before an exhibition of Bachand's work, local sponsor PHAG (Philadelphia Home Art Garden) has organized the Think Red Gala, another opportunity to think, dance and give.
Think Red Gala, Fri., July 15, 10 p.m., $15-$20, The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St.; Project Red Soks exhibition, Sun., July 17, 2:30-8:30 p.m., free but donations accepted (VIP event, 1-2:30 p.m., $15), The Mansion at Rittenhouse, 252 S. 19th St. Call PHAG, 215-545-5645, or visit www.redsoks.com.
