June 23-29, 2005

OK, let me get this straight: There are two designated periods this summer in which this city is supposed to honor the motor scooter? There's Scooter Week 2005, which we're in the middle of right now can you feel it, Philadelphia? and then there's the Independence Day Scooter Rally, which runs July 1 to 4 (and which we'll deal with next week). Lucky for us we don't need to dust off the ol' Scooty-Puff Junior to join in the fun, since all events are held at the Mills in East Falls, and most are for people of the standing/sitting/dancing persuasion. Thursday there's some kinda pro wrestling/Philly Roller Girls roller derby event, with live music by The Neckties. On Friday, DJ Skribble spins at something called a Miami Beach Party, which is just so scooter. But really, the day-long rock show on Saturday is the main event, with a sweet lineup of local bands like The Capitol Years, Stiffed and Northern Hues, and smooth pop headliners The Walkmen. Hey, weren't they in Saturn commercials? Boo! Two wheels good! Four wheels bad!
Thu.-Sun., June 23-26, $10-$20, The Mills at East Falls, 3502 Scotts Lane, info@scooterweek.com. Complete schedule at www.scooterweek.com.
